A former Gauteng municipal development manager is out on bail of R3,000 after being arrested for alleged involvement in a fraud amounting to R100m.

The Hawks arrested 39-year-old Tshepo Pule Malekana on Wednesday.

Hawks spokesman Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said Malekana allegedly forged the signature of the local Lesedi municipality manager when he illegally sold the council’s vacant land. He was an employee of the municipality between 2017 and 2019. Malekana allegedly took the cash paid for the land.

“Subsequent investigations revealed that Malekana fraudulently created the municipal manager’s firm and also empowered different lawyers in Gauteng to facilitate the purchase of land,” Mulamu said.

“He turned himself in at the Germiston office accompanied by his lawyer and was later charged with fraud and theft. He appeared in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court the same day he was arrested. “

Malekana was released on bail of 3,000 rand and the matter was postponed until May 11.

“No more arrests can be ruled out [out]”Mulamu said.
