Mjongile was diagnosed with colon cancer in April.
Former ANC provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile has died, ANC spokesman Pule Mabe confirmed in a statement Friday morning.
“Comrade Songezo passed away peacefully in the evening hours of Thursday, September 17, 2020, at his family’s home in Morningside, Johannesburg, surrounded by his wife and loved ones,” Mabe said.
Mjongile was diagnosed with colon cancer in April. Mabe said that among Mjongile’s last wishes was “to contribute to the renewal of the ANC and to the success of the National Democratic Revolution.”.

This, Mabe continued, “was a reflection of Comrade Songezo’s commitment to the ANC, the structures of the Democratic Mass Movement (MDM) and to South African society in general.”
Mjongile joined the ANC at a young age, first becoming an activist and then president of the South African Student Congress.
He was later elected to the national executive and national working committees of the ANC Youth League, before becoming the provincial secretary of the Western Cape ANC.
During his fight against colon cancer, Mjongile used Facebook to regularly update users on his condition and to express his political views.
