International travelers aboard overnight flights to South Africa will be allowed to transfer from the airport to their places of accommodation during the curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., the government says. However, visitors have been urged to carry proof of travel to avoid fines or imprisonment if stopped by the police.
On Tuesday, South Africa entered a tight form of level 3 lockdown. New regulations banning alcohol sales and social gatherings coincide with an extended curfew aimed at limiting movement after dark. This extension has already disrupted local flights, and airlines are struggling to adjust their schedules and review reservations.
Between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM, only those with valid work permits will be able to travel to and from their homes. This reprieve is extended to people seeking urgent medical attention.
But during a press conference on Tuesday, Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma agreed that international travelers benefit from that rule.
“International travelers arriving during the curfew period will still be able to reach their destination,” Lamola said.
Although South African travelers have been banned from entering several nations following the discovery of a more infectious variant of Covid-19, known as 501.V2, the country’s airspace is largely unaffected by the recent move to blockade. Level 3 adjusted. International flights to OR Tambo, King Shaka and Cape Town international airports remain operational, albeit in a modest manner compared to the usual December rush.
“If they [international travellers] they can show they were traveling, with the stamp on their ticket or passport … the police will leave them alone, ”said Dlamini-Zuma.
However, the NCCC did not clarify whether this offer will be extended to people departing from South Africa or to local airlines.
Violation of the curfew, without a valid reason, can lead to arrest and prosecution. Violators may be subject to a prison term not exceeding six months, a fine, or both.
