FNB blocks customers’ credit cards without notice

Numerous FNB clients complain that their credit cards have been blocked on Sunday without warning.

Reports of the problem were widespread on Twitter and FNB. Downdetector Page, which saw a huge increase in complaints around 1pm.

Customers reported that attempting to transact with their credit card would result in their payment being declined and the following text message being sent to them:

Outstanding documents are required to comply with STAY. Call the number on the back of your card.

Several Twitter users claimed that this notification seemed to come out of nowhere, as they had not been asked to provide FICA documents before Sunday.

“I went shopping just to discover my CC [credit card] transactions are being rejected pending STAY Documents! What STAY Documents? They never asked me STAY Documents! Absolutely ridiculous, ”said one Twitter user.

“Credit card transactions were declined. The card worked fine yesterday. ” another client stated.

“Both my wife’s and my cards are apparently decreasing due to pending FICA documents. No communication from FNB. We don’t have access to our money. I can’t pay for fuel or food ” a third user declared.

The problem appeared to be affecting in-person and online transactions.

A MyBroadband reader was also experiencing the problem, and his credit card account was showing R0 available despite not having reached his limit.

According to Downdetector’s outage map, most of the reports came from Gauteng, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

FNB working on a solution

FNB Card CEO Chris Labuschagne told MyBroadband that the bank was aware of an issue affecting some of its customers when processing credit card transactions.

“Our technical teams are working hard to urgently resolve the issue,” Labuschagne said.

“We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused,” he added.
