The fallout from a technical problem at Nedbank last week continues, with FNB clients only receiving refunds after the transaction amounts were deducted twice Monday night.
Across South Africa, people who used Nedbank card terminals to pay for products at various stores last week saw double deductions.
According to Nedbank, some transactions at these terminals on Monday, September 7, were processed again in error on Friday, causing the amounts to be deducted twice.
On Friday, Nedbank said a group of Capitec clients and some of its own account holders were affected.
But on Monday, FNB confirmed that a small number of its customers were also affected by “duplicate transactions of purchases made through another bank’s point-of-sale devices in recent days.”
Netwerk24 reports that Standard Bank customers have also seen double deductions.
“Customers of other banks may have been affected, but the majority were Capitec customers,” a Nedbank spokesperson later confirmed.
A Capitec spokesperson said their account holders already saw their transactions reversed and that Nedbank also reimbursed customers for related transaction fees.
FNB said that the money that was deducted from its clients should be reinvested in its clients’ bank accounts as of Monday night. The bank communicates directly with its customers.
On Friday afternoon, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) said it will engage with affected banks “to review their systems and processes to prevent such cases from occurring in the future.”
