JOHANNESBURG – Low-cost airline FlySafair is investigating the cause of an engine malfunction, which forced pilots operating a flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town to return on Christmas Day.

The plane managed to land safely one hour after its original departure time and the passengers were accommodated on a reserve plane.

The company praised its cabin crew for prioritizing passenger safety.

“Right after take-off, the crew realized that there was a performance problem in the right engine of the aircraft. They went through their entire security procedure to handle those kinds of circumstances, which is obviously something they are trained to do.

“The aircraft was back on the ground about an hour after departure, just after 3:20 pm and the passengers were already accommodated on another flight to Cape Town,” said FlySafair’s chief marketing officer, Kirby Gordon.
