Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sipho Hlomuka, urged residents across the province to be vigilant as weather conditions continue to deteriorate.
In a statement Saturday, Hlomuka said that since New Year’s Eve, parts of the province had experienced heavy rains that in some areas, such as eThekwini and Msunduzi, caused damage to public infrastructure.
“This has resulted in several communities being without electricity with engineers working hard to restore power to the affected areas. The department has received reports of damage to houses in the municipalities of Greater Kokstad and Okhahlamba, where yesterday several houses were partially damaged by strong winds and heavy rains ”.
Hlomuka said disaster management teams have been dispatched to the affected areas and are assessing the damage.
“So far no reports of injuries or deaths have been received.”
He called on residents to remain cautious as poor weather conditions are expected to persist through the weekend.
Last week tThree people were killed in two separate incidents in northern KwaZulu-Natal when they were struck by lightning.
Eight people have been killed by lightning in the province during the last two weeks.
