The Independent Police Investigations Directorate (Ipid) investigates a police officer who shot a man when he was confronted for “flirting with one of the women” while searching a house.
The victim, who was shot on Saturday during the verbal altercation at Impendle in KwaZulu-Natal, was rushed to a nearby clinic where he died.
The events leading up to the shooting unfolded after a member of the community’s goats was allegedly robbed and “the whistleblower obtained information about the suspect who stole their belongings and where they live,” Ipid spokeswoman Ndileka Cola said on Sunday. .
“The author allegedly went to the police station and asked the police officers to accompany them to the suspect’s home. The police accompanied the author to the suspect’s home. While the house was being searched, it is alleged that the policeman was flirting with one of the women who were apparently having a party in the same house.
“An argument ensued between the deceased and the police officer when he allegedly confronted the officer for flirting while on duty. The police allegedly fired a shot at the deceased, he was taken to the nearest clinic by a relative and died, ”Cola said.
The 31-year-old police officer was arrested and will appear in Impendle trial court to face a murder charge on Monday.
Ipid is investigating the death as a result of the police action.
