Johannesburg – The Investigative Police Directorate of Investigations arrested five police officers in Vredenburg, Western Cape, in connection with the murder and assault of Jason Heyns, who died in hospital last month.
The IPID said that the arrest of the five policemen comes after the investigative work of the strategic rural interventions of the direction in the case.
IPID said the police officers allegedly assaulted Heyns, who was being arrested by the officers. Following his assault, Heyns required medical attention and was transferred to Vredenburg Hospital, who immediately transferred him to Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town due to the severity of his injuries.
He died in the hospital seven days later.
IPID spokeswoman Ndileka Cola said police did not report the matter to IPID, but the family alerted management and an investigation was launched.
“The SAPS did not report this incident as required by the IPID Act, the management later learned from the family of the deceased who reported the death as a result of a case of police action on November 3, 2020.
“IPID conducted an in-depth investigation into this incident that led to the identification and arrest of the five members today,” Cola said.
The police officers were arrested on Wednesday and are expected to appear before the Vredenburg Magistrates Court on Thursday, where they will face a murder charge.
Meanwhile, early Wednesday, the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Gauteng convicted two police officers who were found guilty of the murder of Innocent Sebediela, a suspect who had been charged with stealing his brother-in-law’s television and later killed in police custody. – 28 years behind bars.
Agent Derrick Johnson and Agent Abraham Dintwe were both previously convicted of murder and torture in the same court earlier this month.
Johnson and Dintwe, with the inmates, had assaulted and tortured Sebediela in the police cells, leading to her death.
Police arrested Sebediela, who was 43, after she was suspected of stealing her brother-in-law’s television in 2018.
“IPID welcomes the couple’s ruling and hopes that today’s outcome sends a strong message to all police officers that they are not above the law, they have a responsibility to respect the laws of the country while complying with their constitutional duties, “Cola said. .
