Five things Gavin Hunt urgently needs to fix at Chiefs

New coach Gavin Hunt takes over at Kaizer Chiefs on the back of the Soweto Giants’ longest barren stint in five seasons without a trophy.

The Chiefs experienced heartbreak again when they were transferred to the job on the final day under Hunt’s predecessor Ernst Middendorp in Mamelodi Sundowns’ Absa 2019-20 Premiership.

TimesLIVE looks at five things former SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits league title winning coach Hunt needs to fix at Amakhosi:

1. Decide on Itumeleng Khune

Over the past two seasons, Bafana Bafana stwalwart Khune has seen little action in goal for the Chiefs due to a variety of injuries, but he’s back in top form. Khune was also controversially out of use at times last season under Middendorp.

Hunt must decide who will be his first-choice goalkeeper between fan favorite Khune and Nigeria international Daniel Akpeyi.

2. Establish a close relationship with Bobby Motaung

Bobby Motaung wields a lot of power in Kaizer Chiefs among players as a football coach, and it will be in Hunt and the club’s interest if the two forge a good working relationship.

3. Take charge of signing players

If Amakhosi succeeds in overturning the transfer ban in their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport that was handed to them by the world governing body FIFA, Gavin Hunt must ensure that he has full control of the recruitment of players. Chiefs’ hiring policy has been vague for a few years, and Hunt is known for his ability to spot a deal and attract genuine quality to the market.

4. Restore ambition and winning mindset

Amakhosi has not won a major trophy in five seasons since they won the league and cup double with Stuart Baxter in the 2014-15 season. Hunt, who has won four leagues, must restore ambition and develop a winning mindset at Naturena.

5. Get rid of dead wood

If the Chiefs can sign players, Hunt will have to ditch several players who have been passengers on the team and replace them with those he trusts to do the job for him.
