Pretoria: Police fatally wounded five suspects during a cash-in-transit robbery in Dawn Park near Springs, while two others have been arrested.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, police said.
Police said some of the stolen money was recovered, while four firearms with ammunition and three vehicles suspected of being stolen were also seized.
Police said a CIT robbery was committed on Galahad Road in Dawn Park around 8 a.m., where an unknown number of suspects stole an undisclosed amount of money from security guards before fleeing the scene leaving one of their vehicles. on fire.
Sedibeng’s tactical response team and Ekhurhuleni’s SWAT team followed up on intelligence that led them to Klipoortjie on Carol Avenue.
Upon arrival at the identified safe house, there was a shootout between the suspects and the police. Five suspects were shot and killed, while two were arrested.
Police seized three vehicles that had been hijacked in separate incidents in Gauteng this year in Springs, Midrand and Boksburg North.
Four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were also seized, as well as an undisclosed amount of money.
The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla Sitole, has praised the police action that resulted in the disruption of the CIT-related union in the country.
“With the preparation for the holiday season, there will be increased surveillance and prioritization of cash theft in transit, especially in Gauteng, where it is more prevalent,” Sitole said.
