No transfer window would be complete without rumors of Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale joining Manchester United, but they usually turn out to be nothing more than media hype and unfounded gossip.
In all likelihood this time will probably be no different, but some interesting details have emerged in recent weeks that suggest that for once the smoke could actually be coming from a genuine fire.
First, it seems clear that United had hoped to sign Jadon Sancho this summer, but he has failed and now needs a world-class alternative right winger to fill that void in the team. Given that United have wasted so much time putting the resuscitation paddles into a clearly dead Sancho deal, many of their original list of reported alternatives have been bought by other clubs or taken off the market. Ferran Torres has moved to City, for example, Milot Rashica looks set to join Aston Villa, Willian has gone to Arsenal, Bayern Munich has decided to keep Kingsley Coman and David Brooks has been shut out of the market by Bournemouth.
This leaves the media to suggest that with United hoping to try again for Sancho in ten months time, they will move on for a more ready quality short-term replacement in this window, with Ivan Perisic, Douglas Costa and Bale the names that Are exchanged. about in the press.
Compared to these other two, Bale may well be the best option; they’re all a year apart in terms of age, Bale’s asking price would likely be the lowest of the three (Real is reported to be looking for around £ 18 million for Bale, or would even let him leave on a free one) , and his recent injury history is actually better than everyone else (56 days off last season vs. 66 for Perisic and 82 for Costa).
Add this to the recent revelation by former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón that a Premier League team offered £ 89 million for Bale last summer. Given Chelsea was under a transfer ban at the time, United looks like the only truly viable club to have made such an offer (City could have, too, but it seems unlikely they will target the player).
According to Talksport, the offer was “rejected by Real Madrid as Bale was expected to be a key figure of the first team in 2019/20, something that could not have been further from what actually happened.”
If that offer really came from United and Bale is now available for a fifth of that price or less, then the prospect of a new move now is not as unlikely as it sounds.
A fourth piece of the puzzle comes from Bale himself, who recently expressed his desire to return to the Premier League and acknowledged that he came close to leaving last summer.
‘If those options arise [of a Premier League transfer] it’s something I would look at for sure ‘ The express reports he said recently.
‘We’ll see what happens, we have a lot of time in this transfer window and a couple of others as well. Time will tell… the decision is in the hands of Real Madrid ”.
“I tried to leave last year but they blocked everything at the last second. It was a project I was excited about, but it didn’t materialize. ‘
Under Glazer’s ownership, United have focused on big-name transfers that are good business investments (Di María, Falcao, Ibrahimovic, Sánchez and Pogba, for example, along with a failed attempt by Neymar). Recently, the family even brought legendary quarterback Tom Brady, 43, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their American football franchise. The Glazers would no doubt approve of a Bale transfer.
This gives us five good reasons why Bale to Manchester United really should be taken seriously as a transfer rumor this year, if the problem of his £ 600,000 weekly salary can be solved.
United fans are likely to be lukewarm on the idea, as some of those big-name signings disappointed them in the past and became suspicious of Bale’s injury history. If, however, a fully fit Gareth Bale found form and a new life on United’s right flank, it could turn out to be a spectacular business for the club and could even transform Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side into true title contenders.
Manchester United’s new star Donny van de Beek will be the 13th Dutchman to play for the senior team. But how much do you know about the other 12? Take our questionnaire below to find out.
