Five gunmen stormed an Eastern Cape police station in the early hours of Saturday morning and slipped away in a police van with multiple firearms.

Police spokesman Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the gang entered the Moyeni Police Station in Amathole district under the pretext that they needed help.

“As the police officer prepared to hear his problem, the suspects pointed at the policemen at gunpoint and took three firearms, an R5 rifle and two 9mm pistols,” he said.

“As the suspects fled the station, they came across another member outside the Community Service Center, who was also robbed of a police vehicle that was later found abandoned about two kilometers from the police station.”

“This attack on the police station looks very serious [and] we have mobilized maximum resources to locate these thieves, “said Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga.

Kinana said that anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or log the information through the My SAPS app.
