Durban – Police said homeless people searching for food in a park container found five cold fetuses in a plastic package.
The discovery took place on Saturday night at Albert Park in Durban.
According to KZN police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker, the homeless were searching for food in plastic containers placed along Maudi Mfusi Road in Durban when one of them felt something cold inside the container.
“He took off the bag and was amazed when he saw fetuses inside.”
Naicker said that Durban Central SAPS police officers were called to the scene around 10 p.m.
“Durban Central police officers recovered five fetuses in a plastic container.”
Charges of concealment of the birth list were opened at the Durban Central Police Station for investigation.
In another incident, the body of a newborn was found dumped in a rubbish heap in central Durban in May.
According to Leon Fourie, operations manager for the Life Response ambulance service, they received a call shortly after 11 a.m. about a baby left in a garbage can along Denis Hurley and Soldiers Way in Durban Central.
“Upon arrival, Life Response paramedics found a full-term newborn next to a DSW garbage can. Unfortunately, the paramedics were unable to do anything because the baby was already dead.”
