Dorothy Elaine Lewis, the first woman of color to be a midwife at Groote Schuur Hospital, died this weekend, according to Heroes of Groote Schuur.
She was 88 years old.
Lewis served the hospital for 25 years, after responding to a newspaper job advertisement for a sister nurse.

In a May 2020 interview, Lewis said the hospital hired her before meeting her because they assumed she was white.
“The hospital assumed that because I lived in Observatorio, I was white and hired me without knowing me. They were rudely surprised that I was not ‘non-white’ when I asked for an interview and they met me face to face. But by then they had hired me. although they changed the ward I would work in. I was not the first nurse of color in the hospital, “she said.

Three years after being employed at the hospital, she was promoted and became the first black midwife. He retired in 1995.
In addition to being the first black midwife, she also helped build the hospital’s Oakstreet School. “Originally there was a daycare for the children of white employees, but I recommended that we create a daycare for all children.”
