Firefighters robbed at gunpoint in Cape Town after fake call

The robbers lured two Cape Town city firefighters into a trap with a fake fire call Saturday morning.

Firefighters were attacked and robbed at gunpoint in Wallacedene, Cape Town, while on their way to help alleged people in distress.

The City said these incidents are becoming common and breaking the trust firefighters need to help people.

The two had to be treated in the hospital.

It was as Brackenfell’s crew made their way through the structures into the smoke that the three attackers attacked.

“It turned out that there was no structural fire as reported, which makes it look like it was a trap,” said a statement from the mayor’s committee member for community safety.

“These officers provide life-saving service and each incident of this nature undermines trust between the fire service and the communities they serve.”

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the city’s public emergency communications center on 021 480 7700 from a cell phone or 107 from a landline phone, or report it to the police.

Firefighters in the Western Cape are on high alert for the “fire season”, which is generally exacerbated by high winds.
