CAPE TOWN – Finance Minister Tito Mboweni defended his decision on Wednesday to hire former Tiso Blackstar journalist Ranjeni Munusamy.

Mboweni was responding to a question from Floyd Shivambu of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) during a session of the National Assembly.

The EFF had previously demanded that Mboweni revoke the appointment because Munusamy had appeared before the state capture investigation, in connection with questionable payments on his bank account.

Mboweni said Munusamy was assigned the job of a community outreach officer, or political secretary, in his office because she had the skills required for the position.

“She is highly qualified for the position; she has extensive knowledge of politics and can read the environment very well, and therefore provides sufficient support to the finance minister.”

Mboweni said Munusamy was hired without the job being announced in terms of the Public Service Law and regulations, which allowed for this.

He says it was not true that she was writing a book as a ghost for him and that it was an “urban legend” created by the EFF.
Mboweni said he discussed Munusamy’s appearance before the state’s capture investigation with her and was satisfied that she would be acquitted, but said that if she was found guilty of wrongdoing, she would be removed from her office.
