Ferdi Moolman to step down as CEO of MTN Nigeria

Ferdi Moolman, the The longtime CEO of MTN Nigeria, the largest operating subsidiary of MTN Group, will step down from office at the end of February 2021.

Moolman, 57, will assume the role of chief risk officer for the Johannesburg-based group effective March 1, 2020, MTN said in a statement to shareholders on Monday.

He joined MTN 18 years ago and has held various senior positions in the group’s operations in Nigeria and Iran, including the last five years as CEO of MTN Nigeria.

“Enterprise risk management is an integral part of MTN’s growth strategy and Ferdi will bring extensive operational and financial experience to the position given his in-depth knowledge of the group, its markets and the telecommunications sector,” the group said in the statement.

“As such, this appointment establishes the role of a chief risk officer as an integral part of the executive committee, in which Ferdi will continue to serve. Ferdi will also remain on the board of MTN Nigeria and, in due course, will be appointed to other boards of material subsidiaries given his new group responsibility.

Successor

Karl Toriola, 48, will replace Moolman as Nigeria’s CEO. Toriola is currently MTN’s Vice President, West and Central Africa Region, a position he has held for the past five years. He has also held several high-level operational positions at MTN since joining the group in 2006, including that of Technical Director of MTN Nigeria and Managing Director of MTN Cameroon.

His successor as vice president for the region will be announced after the group’s strategy review is completed in late November 2020, MTN said.

“Karl brings extensive technical and business experience to the position, as well as a deep understanding of the Nigerian market,” said Group CEO Ralph Mupita. “He started his career at MTN in his home country at MTN Nigeria 14 years ago and has all the necessary attributes to lead this important business going forward.”

On Moolman, Mupita said: “Ferdi has been an exemplary leader for MTN Nigeria and has put the business on a strong growth platform for the future.
