Fears of serious injury in Pollard, half Bok fly hospitalized

Springbok’s midfielder Handre Pollard had to be removed from the field after sustaining a suspected knee injury in Friday’s Top 14 game for Montpellier.

Montpellier suffered a heavy defeat to Racing 92, but the real concern from a South African perspective will be the news that Pollard suffered what could be a serious injury.

According to reports from France, Pollard was transported from the ground to hospital and initial fears are that the World Cup winner would suffer ligament damage, which would then require several months of inactivity.

“Generally, when someone comes out on a stretcher, it is never very good even though there can be different degrees of knee injuries,” Montpellier coach Xavier Garbajosa said.

“He went to the hospital,” he added.

If Pollard is out of action for an extended period, he will almost certainly not take part in the Rugby Championship at the end of the year if the Springboks are given the go-ahead to participate.
