JOHANNESBURG – The family of the murdered anesthetist Abdulhay Munshi has described the doctor as a man of integrity and urged the authorities to act without prejudice in arresting those responsible for his death.

Family, friends and the healthcare fraternity gathered outside Munshi’s home in Houghton on Thursday to pay their last respects to the doctor following his murder this week.

Munshi was one of two prominent doctors who found themselves in the middle of a medical storm after being blamed for the death of 10-year-old Zayaan Sayed last year.

Abdulhay Munshi’s family has described his murder as a cruel and vindictive act of violence.

Munshi was shot several times point-blank in Orange Grove on Wednesday.

Both Munshi and Dr. Peter Beale were charged with wrongful death and suspended from operating at the Netcare facility after Sayed’s death.

The court case was in an early stage and had been postponed until November 16, and Munshi and Beale were released on bail of 10,000 rand each.

Munshi’s cousin and family spokesman Goolam Hoosen said they were devastated.

“We simply cannot believe this has happened to Abdulhay, our dear cousin. This kind of tragic incident is not something that anyone can anticipate and this is of great concern to us.”

Dr. Munshi was buried yesterday in the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.
