A Limpopo man was arrested after he allegedly scammed people out of thousands of rand while pretending to be a police captain in 2019.

The 28-year-old was arrested in a park in Seshego, Polokwane on Friday after his victims opened several fraud cases.

“The imposter allegedly posed as a police captain from the provincial human resources management. He would then call unsuspecting people who wanted to enlist in SAPS to deposit a certain amount of money in various accounts for medical reports,” said the Police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

Ngoepe said:

Later, I would instruct them to take the receipt to the hiring office as proof of payment.

When people went to the hiring office, they found out that they had been scammed.

Ngoepe said police investigations are continuing and the suspect could be related to other crimes.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nneke Ledwaba warned the public to be vigilant.

Ledwaba said:

The police will not request or demand cash for any reason during the recruitment process or investigations. Police recruitment forms are not for sale and our posts are advertised on different media platforms with clear specifications.

“Community members should report these kinds of tendencies to the police immediately,” Ledwaba said.
