Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Liverpool asked Ousmane Dembele in June. This transfer window could have been very different.
Romano makes the claim on Twitter. He says Liverpool asked Barcelona for a loan agreement with a purchase option. Things did not work out, however, as Dembélé “decided to stay at Barcelona.”
The implication is that Liverpool could have done it, or at least that the Catalans were open to the idea. Instead, the player simply didn’t want to move to Anfield.
Romano goes on to say that Manchester United could also have a hard time signing Dembélé. He seems to want a longer stay at Barcelona.
What does RTK have to say
Dembélé is, without a doubt, a player of great talent; after all, there’s a reason Barcelona paid over £ 135 million for him. But he is also a very injury-prone player.
That’s something we’ve covered before as this isn’t the first time we’ve seen links between Dembele and Liverpool. You can read about his extensive injury history here, but simply put, it hasn’t been an easy few years.
And in hindsight this worked the best.
Liverpool surely offered a loan for two reasons. First of all, because of his injury history. You don’t want to spend a ton of money on someone who could quickly collapse. The one-year loan allows Liverpool to really study the potential investment.
The other reason is the current economic climate. Things were much less certain in June, and they are still quite uncertain now. The plan may have been to pay very little now and see if things are more comfortable in a year.
But it was not like that, and that is good. Liverpool, on the other hand, have Diogo Jota now and, while he may not have Dembélé’s high ceiling, he does check other boxes.
For one thing, it has no injury history, which makes it a safer investment. And coming from the Wolves, he’s likely suited to being a squad player to start with better than Dembele. It’s hard to believe that Dembélé’s next move will be for anything other than first-team football.
As exciting as Dembele was, we’re glad things turned out the way they did.
