F1 legend Stewart “disappointed” in Lewis Hamilton over recent war of words

Lewis Hamilton made history Sunday by taking first place on the podium at the Eifel Grand Prix. His emphatic victory saw him match Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins.

And as for Hamilton, his record streak is far from over. If he continues with the team, there could be a flurry of records set by Hamilton.

However, the success breeds criticism, and Hamilton recently opened up about how he’s been receiving a good chunk of hatred from sports veterans.

Lewis Hamilton is the best driver today

In response to those comments, one of the veterans, Sir Jackie Stewart, has given his own justification. He had recently spoken on a podcast about how Hamilton was not among the best drivers he had ever seen.

Stewart is quoted as saying: “I am not trying to belittle Lewis Hamilton and I maintain his performances with incredible respect. He is the best pilot today.

“I am not going to take him down and I am disappointed that he thinks that way. What do I have to gain from that? I am 81 years old.

“They asked me what I thought about Lewis becoming the winningest driver of all time and if that made him the best.”

Stewart was rightfully a racing legend of his own time. A three-time driver’s champion, the ‘Flying Scot’ raced with a host of good drivers and also participated in other racing events.

There can never be a better F1 driver of all time

The reasoning behind this claim is pretty solid. For example, the eras and machinery were different at various times, a factor that directly impacts the talent and racing records that some drivers create.

“They asked me what I thought about Lewis becoming the winningest driver of all time and if that made him the best ever.

“I said that it is very difficult to say that. The greatest that I think there has been is Juan Manuel Fangio, followed by Jim Clark. But even then, is it correct to say that someone is the best? “ Stewart commented.

Regardless of whether or not Hamilton is the best of all time, he has now shown that he lives up to the best of the best.
