The newly formed cabinet unites the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi with the southern separatists. The two groups are the main Yemeni factions in an alliance based in the south and backed by Saudi Arabia, fighting against the Iranian-aligned Houthi movement that controls the north.

The port city of Aden, in the south of the country, has been embroiled in violence due to the rift between the separatists and the Hadi government. The separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC), which seeks independence for southern Yemen, declared self-government in Aden earlier this year, sparking violent clashes and complicating UN efforts to forge a permanent ceasefire in the general conflict.
The Saudi-led coalition announced earlier this month the new power-sharing cabinet that would include the separatists.
The cabinet landed in Riyadh, where both parties negotiated for more than a year with the Saudi mediation.
