the Springboks’ jersey for next year’s home series against him British and Irish lions was unveiled on Friday.
Sponsors ASICS released a t-shirt that features a vintage color scheme and a special 3D commemorative logo, among other features.
The world champions will don a unique commemorative jersey when they face the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in three home events next year.
“The Lions tours are held only every 12 years, so we thought it appropriate to create a jersey that is undeniably unique,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby, in a press release.
“The team will only wear it three times and we wanted it to be memorable and special for the players and hopefully this unique representation of Springbok green, along with the badge, will do just that.”
The 2021 tour will be the 14th time the British & Irish Lions have visited South Africa and the sponsors wanted to celebrate this rich history by putting a classic spin on a modern jersey.
“A tour of the British and Irish Lions to South Africa is a major event for both players and fans, taking place only about every 12 years.” ASICS South Africa said in a stetement.
“That kind of weirdness comes with a special responsibility when creating a jersey and we wanted players and fans to get goosebumps every time they pulled the jersey over their heads.”
In that sense, the new jersey combines the traditions of garment making with the latest in high performance garment design and materials.
Without a doubt, the most distinctive feature of the new jersey is its unique color combination. According to ASICS, color matching and color tinting was not historically the precise art that it is today. Very often when the team was out on the field from game to game the jerseys did not look the same and potentially often showed a different shade of green.
“You go green by mixing blue and yellow together and a lot of times when these guys sold out their shirts seemed to have a slight blue tinge.” ASICS South Africa added.
“It’s still green, of course, but a little more blue than some of the modern incarnations of green and gold. This jersey captures that essence.”
Aside from the color scheme, the new jersey retains the classic gold collar and features an enlarged crest, just like on rugby jerseys of yesteryear, detailed by a 3D logo as seen on many football club kits from around the world. Champions League.
The new jersey will also carry the logo of MTN, who have been proud partners of the Springboks for more than three years.
Nomsa Mazibuko, General Manager of Brand and Communication for MTN SA, said that both MTN and the Springboks have enjoyed a fruitful relationship over the years, which included South Africa as world champion.
“MTN is proud to take this relationship one step further as primary partners during the British & Irish Lions Tour 2021,” said Mazibuko, who also confirmed that partnering with the Springboks for this tour is a natural progression for the cellular giant as en Widely regarded as the second largest rugby tournament in the world, considering that it can only be played in South Africa every 12 years.
“It is our core belief that everyone deserves access to a modern connected life and MTN is the facilitator that connects South Africans with one another and is a proud sponsor of their passion.”
The Lions series begins on Saturday, July 3, 2021 when the Lions take on the Stormers in Cape Town. Three weeks later, the Springboks will wear the new jersey for the first time at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, a venue that previously hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup final.
