JOHANNESBURG – KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala identified the eThekwini metro as the province’s coronavirus epicenter with 840 confirmed cases and 35 deaths.
Zikalala made the announcement during a press conference in Durban on Sunday. The province has registered 1,307 infections and 43 COVID-19 related deaths.
“The median number of new patients reported in the province is 19 cases / day with the eThekwini and iLembe districts contributing the highest number of cases per day. There are 54 new cases that were reported in the province yesterday. [Saturday] alone, ”the prime minister said in a statement.
“As of May 9, 2020, the province had a total of 135 hospitalized patients; 46 admitted in the private sector and 92 in the public sector. There were 13 patients who needed to be in an intensive care unit.
“The province has a total of 43 registered deaths in 5 of the 11 districts: the eThekwini District has registered the highest mortality rate of 80%, followed by the King Cetshwayo District with 8% and the UGu District with 5%”, added.
Zikalala said a massive detection and testing campaign had helped identify cases that would otherwise have been lost.
“The community assessment and evidence, which we presented when the president declared closure, helped us identify more cases that we would miss if we only continued to follow up on contacts only. We are happy to have started this initiative, ”he said.
He also applauded law enforcement agencies for arresting those who failed to comply with the shutdown regulations to curb the spread of COVID-19. The Prime Minister has counted the statistics since May 4.
“Between May 4 and 7, 2020, a total of 26,170 law enforcement officers were deployed to enforce the regulations. A total of 355 roadblocks were carried out during which 40,088 vehicles stopped and 84,507 people recorded or interviewed.
“From May 4 to 7, 2020, from May 1, 1,125 cases were opened and during this time 1,182 arrests were made. During this time 450 guilty admission fines were issued. As the application continued, a total of 2,744 liquor and business inspections were conducted, during which 155 non-compliant sites were identified, ”said Zikalala.
