JOHANNESBURG – Eskom said Friday that it was working hard to avoid a dark Christmas.
There are concerns about the load shedding again this week, as the system remains restricted with a probability of blackouts if there are more failures.
However, the power company is hopeful that the weekend and holiday period will ease pressure on the grid and allow the system to increase its capacity.
Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said: “We expect that as demand falls, industrial demand will decrease significantly during that period. We hope that we will not be forced to implement load reduction. This is great hope on our part and, of course, we are working as hard as we can to avoid the possibility of a dark Christmas. ”
Meanwhile, Eskom has deliberately cut power to much of Benoni, Vosloorus, Brakpan and Nigel on Friday morning.
The utility company said so-called “load shedding” was implemented in these Gauteng communities to protect their network from surges.
The utility company said affected customers could expect power to be restored at 9 p.m.
