CAPE TOWN – Eskom was the main topic on the agenda at the National Council of Provinces Thursday afternoon, where Vice President David Mabuza was answering questions.
This is Mabuza’s first question-and-answer session in more than a month after a long illness.
The vice president has once again outlined the government’s plan to successfully roll back the ailing state company.
He said that economic growth and recovery depended on the supply of electricity, as the country experienced a load drop in stage 4.
“The rapid economic growth and recovery of our country is likely to depend on our ability to ensure the security of energy supply, in order to support industrialization and also ensure that there are no disruptions to people’s livelihoods due to disruptions. of electricity”.
Mabuza said the government’s support came with conditions.
“Our support for Eskom focuses on the following: ensuring that Eskom strengthens its system of leadership, governance and accountability. Address debt and liquidity challenges, including debt payments to Eskom by government entities. We have programs to minimize power outages and accelerate completion of the newly constructed program that will provide additional power capacity. “
The vice president declined to comment on the allegations made against Eskom’s management.
“I believe, honorable member, that it would be wrong for me to criticize the Eskom management as having hidden interests; instead of the interests of the country. “
He also elaborated more on the new-looking power utility.
“As the president announced, Eskom will be divided into these three entities, or ‘subsidiaries’ if you want to call them [that] – its generation, transmission and distribution. We believe that all of these entities will remain under Eskom but will operate independently, with their own asset registry. They can go on their own to raise money and run their operations. “
Mabuza said there were no plans to privatize Eskom.
