However, the power company urged the public to continue to use electricity sparingly, saying that the power system remained severely restricted. Some 10,661MW of capacity was unavailable due to unplanned maintenance, in addition to 8,229MW that was offline for planned maintenance.

On Friday night, Eskom had planned to implement Stage 2 load shedding over the weekend. But on Saturday afternoon it said this would be downgraded to Stage 1 on Sunday as its emergency generation reserves began to show a significant recovery.

When it announced the full suspension of load shedding on Sunday morning, the power company said it will communicate with South Africa in a timely manner in case there is any significant change to the electrical system that may require load shedding again.
