Eskom says its systems are severely restricted, forcing the company to implement stage 2 load shedding on Tuesday (September 1) from 12 noon to 10 p.m.
The power company said it suffered multiple malfunctions to the unit, leading to the limitations. Ten generating units at seven power plants have broken down in the last 48 hours.
One generator broke down at the Armot, Medupi, Lethabo and Matla power plants, while two units at the Majuba, Cambden and Tutuka power plants also broke down.
“This, with the need to conserve power generation reserves, requires that load shedding be implemented to protect the integrity of the system,” Eskom said.
Unplanned breakdowns amount to 11,665MW of capacity, with 4,558MW taken offline for planned maintenance.
Any other breakdown could push the load shedding stage to higher levels, Eskom warned.
