Energy expert Ted Blom accused the utility of losing more than 5,000 megawatts during phase 4 of load reduction.

JOHANNESBURG – Eskom on Wednesday denied claims that it lied to customers by increasing the load reduction earlier this month to stage 6 without notifying the public.

Energy expert Ted Blom accused the power company of losing more than 5,000 megawatts during phase 4 of load reduction.

According to Eskom’s own descriptions, that equates to stage 6 of continuous blackouts.

Blom said he had evidence to show that the utility was not being honest with South Africans.

“On the second day, Eskom charged spilled 5,389 megawatts, which is supposed to be level 6. I saw that they charged spilled over 5,000 megawatts [and] by their own rules, that’s level 6, ”he said.

However, Eskom spokesman Sikonathi Mantshantsha said that Blom’s claims were not true.

“At no point did we lie to anyone and I am pleased to note that he acknowledges that Eskom cannot fully supply power to the country, which Eskom has admitted for a while now. Unfortunately, that’s where we are right now, ”he said.
