Johannesburg – Eskom has announced further Stage 4 load reduction for Thursday, blaming cold weather across the country and persistent generation limitations.

The South Africans were greeted in September with the news of the Stage 2 cargo drop on Tuesday morning.

On Wednesday, there was more cargo shedding and after 3pm, this escalated two levels, to cargo shedding stage 4.

In a statement Wednesday, the power company said that the Stage 4 load reduction on Thursday would begin from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“Eskom would like to confirm that due to continued severe generation supply constraints caused by multiple unit failures, as well as additional demand as a result of cold weather, phase 4 load shedding will resume at 8am until 10 pm on Thursday.

“The loss of load will persist throughout the week, as Eskom teams work 24 hours a day to put as many of these generating units back into service as possible,” the energy company statement reads. .

Residents of the city of Johannesburg were hampered, experiencing up to an additional hour of load loss after it was upgraded to Stage 4.

In areas like Randburg, Bryanston and Fourways, their cargo drop lasted for more than an hour.

Reasons for the delay in power return were not disclosed, but some residents in the Bryanston area were again more frustrated when their area suffered a power outage about an hour after power was restored.

Anger and frustration

In the meantime, Eskom said it will continue to communicate the stages of cargo removal in case there are more developments.

“Load sharing is necessary to conserve and replenish emergency reserves and at the same time maintain the stability of the electrical system.

“Eskom urges the people of South Africa to help reduce electricity use to ease pressure on the system,” the energy company said.
