JOHANNESBURG – Eskom and the Special Investigation Unit will recover R1.56 billion in overpayments made to ABB South Africa.

The SIU and the power company made a joint announcement Friday afternoon.

The NPA and SIU are investigating the alleged corruption at Eskom.

SIU chief Andy Mothibi said the investigation unit cooperated with the Hawks and the FBI for investigations that began in 2018.

Eskom was found to have awarded ABB South Africa a contract to carry out work at the Khusile power plant. The contract was awarded through corrupt means.

SIU and Eskom agreed on a review to void ABB’s contract.

Mothibi said that “we are delighted with this agreement, which is an important vindication of the tireless efforts of the SIU researchers working in close cooperation with the Eskom and ABB teams.”

ABB will pay 1.56 billion rand within 14 days of signing the agreement.

The money recovered will be used to reduce Eskom’s debts and debt service costs.
