The two Ennerdale policemen who were found guilty of torturing and murdering two men have been sentenced to 18 years each for murder and 10 years each for torture after it was discovered that they had abused the authority entrusted to them. .
Former police officers Cst Derrick Johnson, 42, and Cst Abraham Dintwe, 35, received their sentence in South Gauteng Superior Court in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court for the 2018 murder of Innocent Sebediela and the torture of Mashangu Dludla.
While sentencing, Acting Judge Thomas Mathunzi discovered that the two officers abused the authority entrusted to them to serve and protect the Ennerdale community.
“The two defendants abused their authority and did so while inside the Ennerdale Police Station and, in doing so, they also discredited the name of the station. When you take into account where we came from as a country that was under an oppressive regime, the question is how the community is supposed to trust the people who have been entrusted with the responsibility of protecting them, ”said Mathunzi.
Mathunzi was scathing as he passed his sentence and said the two murder convicts showed no remorse during court proceedings.
“The two defendants showed no emotion, did not show any remorse and did not offer any apologies to the family of the deceased. Even his employers did not apologize to the family, ”he said.
While reviewing some of the evidence presented to him, Mathunzi said that the post-mortem report indicates that Sebediela suffered a lot of pain before succumbing to her injuries.
“The doctor who testified during the trial said it appeared that the deceased was developing what looked like pneumonia. During the assault, the deceased was poured in a bucket of cold water that deteriorated his physical condition, ”said Mathunzi.
“There was a chain that was used to block the cells that was used to attack the deceased. The two defendants used pepper spray and plastics to suffocate the victims. Meanwhile, the two defendants were armed with firearms ”.
