JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) said its call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to end the blockade was about saving lives and the bankrupt economy.
He wants the blockade to be lifted, saying the economy couldn’t bear any more pain.
But other opposition parties lashed out at the district attorney on the grounds that his call was irresponsible.
The prosecutor said that the continued blockade threatened the lives of millions of South Africans.
And that with each passing day, the blockade has more devastating effects than COVID-19.
On Tuesday, interim DA leader John Steenhuisen said reopening the entire economy safely was doing the best for the country.
“Any company that can guarantee the safety of its workers, provide PPE and guarantee social distancing must be able to return to work.”
The party has asked that the government be transparent and share data, which justifies the continuation of the blockade.
