Pretoria – The League of Women of the African National Congress congratulated the Vice President-elect of the United States, Kamala Harris, urging her to continue to pioneer and advocate for a global campaign to end racism and patriarchy.

ANCWL Secretary General Meokgo Matuba saluted Harris for being the first Indian-American and the first woman to “crash into one of the highest glass ceilings in the world.”

“Harris, as Vice President of the USA, must be the voice of reason against white supremacy, patriarchy and male chauvinism in the USA and around the world. Under President Joe Biden, he must also be on the front lines to fight imperialism and, among others, call for an end to Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, an end to sanctions against Zimbabwe, Cuba and many. other countries, ”Matuba said. .

“Israel’s forced displacement from Palestine has devastating socio-economic and psychosocial impacts on Palestinian families, particularly women and children. The impacts of the sanctions imposed by the United States on some countries are also having a negative impact on the well-being of women and children ”.

Harris’s mother, who was born in India and moved to the United States for graduate studies, often took her to India to visit her family. Harris’s grandfather, PV Gopalan, migrated from Thulasendrapuram to Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, almost 90 years ago.

Forbes reported that Harris’ rise to the post of vice president-elect was hailed across India, with the country’s prime minister calling it “groundbreaking and a source of immense pride,” while opposition leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called government to prepare a grand welcome for the “daughter of India.”

The ANCWL said that the California senator’s success should encourage all women in the world, particularly black women, to achieve their goals.

“This should also be a lesson to all men in the world that women have the ability to lead,” Matuba said.

Biden has called for unity and has promised to help the United States become a “healed nation.”

Biden, a former vice president of former US President Barack Obama, surpassed the 270 electoral vote threshold needed for victory over the weekend and is set to take the reins from President Donald Trump in January, although the latter has yet to admit defeat.
