CAPE TOWN – The last of three men charged with killing a cyclist along the N1 highway in 2018 has been sentenced to an effective 20 years behind bars.

Elton Abrahams received a 20-year sentence in connection with the shooting of Zelda Van Niekerk, who had stopped near Century City to wait for a friend.

He has also received a 10-year sentence for aggravated robbery.

Abrahams stood guard while Zelda Van Niekerk was mugged and killed under a bridge along the N1 in the vicinity of Century City, but was charged with a common purpose.

Abrahams told the court that on September 28, 2018, he and his two co-defendants smoked a dagga and mandrax pipe and, after they ran out of drugs, decided to search for robbery victims in Summer Greens.

The men found no one to rob and, on their way back to Factreton, they saw the woman sitting on her bicycle under the bridge.

He was waiting for a friend to head to Fish Hoek together, from where they would escort a friend’s son to his tuition dance.

However, the 45-year-old mother’s backpack with R3,000 in it was stolen and shot in the stomach.

Lucian Ackerman fired the shot and was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year, while another defendant, Michael Peterson, received a sentence of 20 years for murder and 10 years for robbery after pleading guilty in November.
