Johannesburg – The Independent Police Investigation Directorate arrested a third police officer in connection with the death of 16-year-old Nathaniel Julies.

IPID spokeswoman Ndileka Cola said the third police officer was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with violating the purposes of justice and possessing prohibited ammunition.

The third police suspect is a detective from the Eldorado Park Police Station, he said. He has not been charged with murder.

“He is scheduled to appear before the Protea Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 3, 2020,” Cola said.

Cola said IPID is still investigating the matter further, ahead of the police officer’s appearance in court on Thursday.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, two officers, Sergeant Simon Ndyalvane and Officer Caylene Whiteboy, appeared before Courtroom 10 of the Protea Magistrates Court.

Ndyalvane and Whiteboy are in preventive detention until September 10 and face charges of murder, discharge of a firearm in a public place, possession of prohibited ammunition and violation of the aims of justice.

They wore masks due to Covid-19 regulations and hooded sweatshirts, with their faces considerably hidden from media cameras.

The two policemen have been in custody until their request for bail on September 10 after one of the officers arrived in room 10 without legal representation.

Nathaniel’s murder sparked angry protests in the Eldorado Park community, with calls for the removal of leadership from the local police station.

Also on Monday, the National Prosecutor’s Office said Monday that it will oppose the bail.

Speaking outside of court Monday, NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane said officers faced a List 6 offense.

Therefore, he said, they will object to bail when they make their second appearance on September 10.

“The matter was postponed and, like the other defendants, they have been given the opportunity to obtain legal representation.

“They will remain in custody until their appearance and we will oppose bail,” he said.

Mjonondwane also said officers were alleged to be in possession of ammunition that was no longer allowed. He said ammunition was banned after Andries Tatane’s murder.

Tatane was allegedly shot and killed by police during a water protest in Ficksburg, Free State in 2011.

Nathaniel Julies was shot and killed last Wednesday night in Eldorado Park.

While there have been allegations that he was shot by mistake, residents claim it was deliberately shot by a child with Down syndrome.
