Durban – Eight suspected armed robbers were arrested after three of them were injured in a shootout with South African Police Service (SAPS) officers following a business robbery in Ballito, south of Durban, SAPS in KwaZulu said on Saturday -Native.
SAPS officers from Umhlali, Inanda, KwaDukuza, and Phoenix conducted an intelligence-driven operation, searching for robbery suspects in Inanda, Newtown A, on Friday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said, it’s a statement.
Police identified a house on Ntiyane Road and ordered the occupants to open the door. However, police officers were fired upon and three men were injured in a subsequent shootout.
“The police arrested eight men and three of them were taken to hospital under police surveillance. The suspects, aged between 21 and 24, were detained at the Inanda police station and will be charged with attempted murder, possession of [illegal] firearms and possession of allegedly stolen property. “
Mbele said that around 2.50am on Friday, a security guard was approached by a group of men at a business premises in Ballito, who then tied him up with cable ties.
“The suspects entered the business premises and loaded boxes of liquor into their getaway vehicle. They also broke into another premises where they stole several cameras. The robbery and robbery cases were opened at the Umhlali police station for investigation.”
The police began their investigation which led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of some of the stolen items. The suspects would appear in Ntuzuma Magistrates Court on Monday and face further charges of burglary and burglary, Mbele said.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Khombinkosi Jula said he was pleased that the police officers involved were not injured in the shooting.
