JOHANNESBURG – Farm workers are slaves in their country of birth and farmers are slave owners.

The Red Berets want Parliament to carry out a special review of the living and working conditions of agricultural workers.
A mini-plenary of the National Assembly has debated an EFF draft resolution to establish an ad-hoc committee to consider this review.
“The lack of proper law enforcement on the farms has created an undesirable relationship on the farms. A relationship that turns farm workers into slaves in the country of their birth, and farm owners into slave owners. Parliament it must play a leadership role in protecting the constitutional rights of all, particularly vulnerable groups in society. Including agricultural workers, “said EFF’s Sam Matiase.
The ANC, however, says the call is ill-conceived.

It says that processes already exist to ensure fair treatment for farm workers.
The party’s Mandla Mandela says the focus should be on building a strong agrarian sector, in an economy in crisis.
