A case was opened with the police against a 52-year-old woman seen on video pointing a gun at EFF members during a heated argument inside a shopping center in Port Elizabeth.
The dramatic incident took place inside the Walmer Palk Shopping Center at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The woman and members of the EFF were arrested and taken to the Walmer Police Station, but all refused to open cases between themselves.
But at 3:00 PM, EFF members returned to the police station where they opened a case of pointing a firearm, Port Elizabeth police spokesman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.
He said the case was under investigation and that no arrests had yet been made.
The dramatic confrontation was filmed inside the lobby of the busy shopping center, and the video clip made the rounds on social media afterward.
In the clip, four mall security guards in yellow vests can be seen trying to separate two female EFF members who yell to physically contact the buyer.
One of the EFF supporters can be heard yelling, “Damn bitch, go back to Europe!”
EFF members can be seen following and taunting the client.
He then stops walking and quickly pulls a gun out of his jacket and points it at the EFF members.
EFF members react by yelling, “Shoot! Shoot!”
EFF Eastern Cape President Yazini Tetyana said the party “enjoys irritating whites.”
Walmer Park Mall Manager Leonie Scheepers said the mall security and police remained on high alert, while the Clicks store was closed until further notice.
Today marks the second day of EFF protests across the country at Clicks stores. This comes as Clicks is fighting a massive public backlash over an advertisement for a TRESemme hair product, featured on the Clicks website, that ridiculed black hair.
The ad described two images of black hair as “dry” and “damaged” and “frizzy” and “dull,” while white hair was described as “fine” and “flat” and “normal.”
Scheepers said the altercation started after the woman began filming a gathering of people in EFF t-shirts outside of Clicks.
The center’s security personnel approached her and asked her to stop recording. She ignored this request and then confronted the person who appeared to be the leader of the group. [EFF]. An altercation ensued. During the altercation, the client pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the group, “Scheepers said.
