Johannesburg- Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have condemned the police brutality of a special police unit within the Nigerian police unit called SARS (Special Anti-Theft Squad).

In a statement, the EFF said that SARS “is known for what can only be described as gross human rights violations, operating as a terrorist group and tormenting the people of Nigeria.”

The party called the SARS unit a disgrace to Africa and all the principles of democracy and humanity.

On Friday, Nigerian police used tear gas to disperse people who gathered in Abuja to protest against SARS.

Protests erupted in Nigeria after a video circulated last week allegedly showing members of the controversial unit fatally shooting a man in Delta state.

The EFF is reiterating the call of Nigerian activists for the SARS unit to be completely eliminated.

“An entity that exists for terror and self-enrichment purposes has no real authority to present itself as a policeman,” the EFF said.

The EFF has repeatedly called on Nigerian activists to provide compensation to all victims of the SARS unit and to conduct an investigation to investigate past and present acts against Nigerian citizens.

“We call on the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) to investigate crimes against humanity committed by what is essentially a militia that is a law in itself. The unity of SARS has no place in a civilized society and we support activists on the continent and the diaspora to condemn police brutality and demand justice, ”the EFF concluded in its statement.
