JOHANNESBURG – While the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said on Monday it was confident it would garner even more support during the upcoming local government elections, the party called for the polls to be postponed.

Instead, the organization has proposed that the 2021 local and provincial government elections and the 2024 national elections should collapse into a single electoral process.

The EFF Central Command Team (CCT) meeting explored several issues, including its preparation for next year’s local government elections.

However, the party’s leader, Julius Malema, told reporters that this included exploring whether next year’s elections should be postponed.

“While the CST adopted a political perspective that local government elections and general elections must be synchronized, we also adopted a framework for the 2021 local government elections, which will be finalized when we conduct the strategy workshop on the EFF. Our determination and focus is on the EFF for the government, because in 2021 the EFF will get a significant number of votes ”.

The EFF is not alone in this call, as the African National Congress has indicated that it would also investigate whether this could be done.

This year, the Constitutional Court ruled that independent candidates could contest national elections, giving Parliament 24 months to amend the Electoral Law for it to take effect.
