Cape Town – Edwin Sodi’s Blackhead Consulting firm, accused of corruption, is in trouble on a different matter involving Lepelle North Water.

Sodi and his company are accused of corruption in the controversial asbestos tender in the Free State, which saw Sodi, former human settlements MEC Oli Mlamleli and former HOD Nthimotse Mokhesi among those arrested and released on bail.

Now, both the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and the Zondo Commission are investigating the company in search of new possible cases of corruption.

This was revealed by the SIU on Tuesday when it reported to the water and sanitation portfolio committee on various investigations it is conducting on the affairs of the Department of Water and Sanitation and its water boards.

The SIU was authorized through six proclamations to investigate the Mhlathuze Water Board, the department, Lepelle Northern Water, the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, Umgeni Water and the Thukela Goedertrouw Water Scheme between 2008 and 2019.

However, SIU director Andy Mothidi said the anti-corruption body had obtained an amendment to the proclamation involving Lepelle North Water.

“As we receive a proclamation, they have a time limit and there is a specific scope covered by a proclamation. If the allegations fall outside the current proclamation, by law we must request an amendment so that we do our investigations within legal limits.” Mothibi said.

He said the Lepelle North Water amendment covered the investigation into possible recent corruption involving Blackhead Consulting.

“Since then we have discovered that it is the same company that was mentioned and implicated in the asbestos investigations that we did in the Free State and that matter is now receiving the attention of the Zondo commission.

“We are working very closely with the Zondo Commission investigators to produce concerted results on that matter,” Mothibi said.
