Ed Woodward turned down the possibility of signing a superstar for just £ 18 million

It emerged that Manchester United turned down the opportunity to sign the youngster for just £ 18 million and has become a superstar.

Manchester United have endured a terrible transfer window, one that may have left them behind from their Premier League rivals, who decided to invest heavily. The club managed to incorporate Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri, while Amad Diallo will arrive in January. However, several of its targets were missed.

Jadon Sancho was undoubtedly the club’s main transfer target in this window, but he failed to reach an agreement with Borussia Dortmund after refusing to pay the € 108 million starting price.

As a result, Ed Woodward is not a popular figure at Old Trafford right now. However, it turns out that this window isn’t the first time you’ve made a mistake.

As The Sun reported, Manchester United had the option to sign Erling Haaland for just £ 18 million in January. However, Ed Woodward turned down the opportunity due to big agent fees and a demand for a £ 70 million release on his contract.

As we know, Borussia Dortmund accepted those terms and swooped in to sign the Norwegian wonder kid. The release clause is scheduled to kick in in 2022. Since then, he has scored 21 goals and provided 5 assists in just 23 appearances for the German team. Those are exceptional numbers for any gamer, forget about one who just turned 20!

In hindsight, it was clearly a mistake on Woodward’s part. Haaland has become an absolute superstar at Borussia Dortmund and don’t be surprised if the biggest clubs in Europe are after him even before the buyout clause kicks in.

It’s a hard pill to swallow that Manchester United could have easily signed him, but chose not to. Yet another in a long list of transfer mistakes made in recent years.
