CAPE TOWN – South Africa’s tourism sector could take another hit as coastal provinces ponder a decision to close beaches during the holiday season.
Eastern Cape Prime Minister Oscar Mabuyane has announced that the province’s beaches will be closed.
This is part of the province’s security plan for the vacation period.
He said that the decision has been communicated to the national government.
Mabuyane spokesman Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said the provincial government and its municipalities made the decision to close beaches and parks as they pose a great risk of spreading COVID-19 infections.
“The main goal is to stop the spread of COVID-19 infections. We have realized that having an open activity in facilities and places represents a huge risk in terms of beaches and recreational parks that are not controlled ”.
