JOHANNESBURG – The Eastern Cape horse care unit said on Friday it was trying to identify those involved in the killing of a horse and stabbing several others during a protest over money from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (FIU) in Port Elizabeth.

Two of the nine horses that were attacked with pangas were in critical condition.

Employees at the Fairview racetrack launched into stabbing Thursday while expressing anger at the failure to pay FIU money and other work-related problems.

Carla Hazel from the horse care unit said they were treating the injured horses and hoped they would make a full recovery.

“The other horses had stab wounds that we saw there … I know one horse was definitely dead when we arrived,” he said.

The SPCA National Council said it was disturbed by the attack.

Meg Wilson from the NSPCA: “Animals have a very important role to play in ecosystems in our lives, in our mental health, and they certainly shouldn’t be on the list of things to be attacked. They are innocent in this situation.”
