JOHANNESBURG – Convicted criminal and adviser to the African National Congress (ANC), Andile Lungisa, received a bail of 10,000 rand in the Makhanda High Court.
This means that you will be released from prison again pending the outcome of your request for authorization to appeal to the Constitutional Court.
Anelisa Ngcakani, from the National Prosecutor’s Office, explained that one of the conditions of the bail was that she had to appear at a local police station twice a week.
“South Africa High Court: Grahamstown has extended the bail of Nelson Mandela Bay councilor Andile Lungisa under the same conditions, pending the outcome of his request for permission to appeal to the Constitutional Court.”
Local newspaper The Herald is quoting the judge as saying that denying Lungisa bail would have deprived him of his liberty unnecessarily.
The judge also noted that if Lungisa’s appeal fails, he will have to serve his sentence.
Nelson Mandela Bay councilor was found guilty of assault after he smashed a glass water jug on the head of a Democratic Alliance councilor during a fight in 2016.
He was sentenced to two years behind bars and has so far served one week behind bars.
