Durban’s waterfront was opened to the public under strict Covid-19 regulations

The Mayor of eThekwini has announced that Durban’s waterfront is open for running, biking and walking.

However, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has urged everyone to ceaselessly adhere to lockdown regulations that seek to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, as the country has entered the second wave of the pandemic.

In response to the president’s speech, Kaunda said the municipality has made significant operational changes to the holiday season plan and operations this year.

The modifications are as follows:

  • A curfew, which implies that everyone is confined to their residence every day from 11 to 4 in the morning;
  • Follow mandatory protocols, including wearing a mask when in any public space or property, including public transportation;
  • The consumption of liquor is not allowed in public places (including beaches and parks), except in authorized consumption places in the place;
  • Beach closures at eThekwini will be enforced on December 16, 25, 26, 31, 2020 and January 1, 2, 3, 2021. Residents can still enjoy other activities along the beach such as jogging in sand, walking, running, yoga. and other healthy lifestyle exercises. The Park and Ride facility that operates in the center of Durban Beach will also be closed these days;
  • The rest of the days, all the beaches are open from 09:00 to 18:00. Lifeguards are on site to monitor and ensure there are no drownings on the beaches. The Park and Ride facility will adhere to these schedules;
  • The curfew will be strictly enforced and no person will be allowed to sleep overnight in buses, taxis and cars in public spaces;
  • Any loud music, whether live or otherwise, will be prohibited.
  • Failure to comply with the prohibitions, conditions, beach opening days and the use of masks and social distancing measures, will lead to the closure of those beaches in breach throughout the Holiday Season.

Kaunda said law enforcement is doing regular patrols to ensure security precautions are observed.

The mayor also implored the hotels, restaurants and canteens of the municipalities to protect themselves from prioritizing the maximization of profits at the expense of their customers and the general public.

Post-funeral gatherings are prohibited and only a maximum of 100 people is allowed for any indoor gathering, while no more than 250 people can meet outdoors.
