Durban – A Durban woman crossing the street in the CBD on Wednesday was shot in the arm when police opened fire on suspected suspects.

According to Durban Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Parbhoo Sewpersad, members of SAPS and Durban Metro police had received reports of a motor vehicle theft in South Beach.

“Police chased the vehicle, a Renault Clio, down Brickhill and Somtseu Road and opened fire.

“Unfortunately, a bystander, approximately 33 years old, was shot in the left arm. She was rushed to Westville Hospital. “

Sewpersad said two suspects were arrested and recovered a wallet and purse.

The third suspect is still at large.

Sewpersad said the woman’s young son was unharmed.

He said further information revealed that the car had been rented.

Sewpersad said these operations are continuing after the auto theft syndicate operating along Durban beach was arrested in late October.

For months, Durban’s “golden mile” has been plagued by a series of vehicle thefts, particularly from Ford Rangers, Toyota Hilux and VW Polo.

“These operations will continue until all suspects are searched,” Sewpersad said.

According to Shawn Herbst, a spokesperson for Netcare 911, paramedics responded to reports of a shooting at the corners of Sylvester Ntuli and Somtseu Roads in Durban Central shortly after 2pm.

“Reports from the scene indicate that an adult woman was shot while waiting at the intersection.

“Paramedics discovered that the patient had suffered an entry / exit wound to her left arm.

“The patient was treated and stabilized at the scene by a Rescue Care and Netcare 911 paramedic.
